Dysentery
A total of 36 cases of Sonne dysentery were notified. Thirteen of
these occurred in 9 resident families and were distributed irregularly over
the year and there was no ascertained connecting factor. Of the remainder
22 occurred in a local children's hospital. The infection was introduced
there in February and was ultimately eradicated in June. One case was
notified from the general hospital and it was probably incubating the infection
when admitted for another reason. All were mild cases and all
recovered.
Scarlet Fever
The incidence of scarlet fever was slightly higher in 1963, 41 cases
being notified as against 31 in the year before. It is still however very
much less prevalent than before the war. Six cases only were admitted to
hospital, the remainder being nursed at home.
As has been observed in previous reports, scarlet fever is and has
been in recent years generally so mild an illness and responds so readily to
modern drug treatment that considerable difficulty is experienced in securing
a reasonable degree of isolation for what is still a communicable disease.
The cases were distributed throughout the year with a rather higher prevalence
in the second quarter. There were no deaths.
