Enteric Fever
After an interval of 9 years free from enteric fever, an outbreak of
para-typhoid B infection type "Taunton" occurred in the spring of 1963.
This was a food borne infection, the investigations into which pointed
clearly to a single source, that of a bakehouse in the district. The first case
occurred on the 22nd February and a succession of 13 further cases was
notified thereafter mostly in late March and in April affecting 10 families.
Five symptomless carriers were also detected associated with the notified
cases.
About this time it was ascertained that a few small isolated outbreaks
of S para-typhoid B of the same type "Taunton" had occurred in different
parts of the country and these had been associated with the consumption
of food made with imported Chinese fluid eggs. Inquiries revealed that the
local bakehouse concerned was using Chinese fluid eggs and that at the
material time had received a tin of eggs from the particular shipping
consignment with which the other outbreaks had been connected. There
can be little doubt that this was the origin of the infection.
All cases recovered, though 3 of them continued to excrete the organism
for many weeks after recovery.
