The figures show little change from those of a year ago.
POPULATION
The census of April, 1961, provided information which enabled the
Registrar-General more accurately to estimate the mid-year population.
For several years there have been local indications that the population
was declining accompanied by an increase in the average age. These were
confirmed by the latest census returns which showed that in the intercensul
period 1951-1961, the de facto population of the district fell from 62,721
to 57,462. The Registrar-General's estimate of the mid-1961 home
population is 56,490, which compares with his estimate of 60,430 in 1960.
This significant drop in the official estimate has had considerable adverse
financial repercussions in the loss and repayment of government grant.
Although the population fell in the intercensul period by more than
5,000, the number of private households increased by 264. There was,
therefore, a distinct fall in the average size of households, the most
probable explanation of which, is the outward migration of young married
people. The percentage increase between 1951 and 1961 in the number
of private dwellings at 6.4 per cent, is the second lowest in the County
of Surrey, where the overall increase was 23 per cent.

BIRTHS
The number of live births registered during 1961 was 731—males 391,
females 340. This is 40 more than in the year before and so with a considerable
drop in the estimate of population, the birth rate shows a
considerable rise to 14.7 per thousand population from 11.4 in 1960.
