Vermin Control
Persons.
The instances of personal verminous infestation have fallen rapidly
since the end of the second world war, as the general standard of personal
hygiene progressively improved and with the removal of the various restrictions
occasioned by war time conditions on the means of practising
personal hygiene. Regretfully we still have the odd incorrigibly verminous
family who need constant supervision, but it is rarely necessary to utilise
the full services of the Council's Cleansing Station for the purpose.
One individual was treated at the Cleansing Station for scabies infestation
contracted abroad and made 3 attendances and one elderly woman
attended twice for personal cleanliness. No schoolchildren received treatment
at the Station.
Premises.

During the year, two lots of bedding were destroyed and three hundred and sixteen premises were treated for the destruction of vermin and insect pests as follows:—

Clean Air Act, 1956
In April the Council authorised the necessary steps to be taken to
secure a Smoke Control Order in respect of the first Smokeless Zone, the
area being that bounded by Buckhurst Avenue on the north, Green Wrythe
Lane on the West, Nightingale Road on the south and the River Wandle on
the east. The area comprises 139 acres, 31 streets, 1,129 private dwellings,
298 Council owned dwellings, 27 shops, 2 factories, one horticultural
nursery, one builder's yard and one club.
