The Registrar-General's statistics relating to population, births and
deaths differ slightly from those compiled from local records. The total
figures in respect of the district as a whole, which are supplied by the
Registrar-General, are set out in this report, but where classification has
been made, e.g. by age groups, sex, wards, etc., it has necessarily been based
on our own records, which may, in the aggregate, show slight discrepancies
compared with the Registrar-General's totals.
UNEMPLOYMENT
The following figures in respect of persons living in Carshalton
registered as unemployed at the Sutton Employment Exchange and the
Carshalton Youth Employment Bureau at the end of 1958 are supplied
through the courtesy of the Exchange Manager and the Youth Employment
Officer:
Men 198
Women 44
Boys 6
Girls 3
The figures in respect of men and women increased by 91 over those
12 months earlier.
POPULATION
The Registrar-General's estimate of the home population at mid-year is
60,300 which is 140 less than his estimate of a year before. The natural
increase representing the excess of births over deaths is of the order of 200,
so the Registrar-General's recent estimate postulates that outward migration
between mid-1957 and mid-1958 exceeded inward migration by approximately
340 persons. An examination of the Council's waiting list for
housing, indicates that 104 applicants were transferred to housing accommodation
outside the area in the period 1st July, 1957 to 30th June, 1958.
Assuming an average of 3 persons per family unit, rather more than 300
individuals would have been transferred in this manner. The numbers
moving in and out of the district under private arrangements are not known,
but the Registrar-General's estimate would seem to assume that the number
going out exceeded those coming in by approximately 30.
