National Assistance Acts, 1948—1951
No occasion arose during the year which required the use of the
statutory powers of these Acts which can secure the compulsory removal
to suitable places of care of persons living in insanitary conditions as a
result of old age or infirmity and neglect.
Section 50
The occasion did not arise for the Council to arrange for the burial of
any person under Section 50 of the 1948 Act.
Disposal of the Dead
The Carshalton and Merton and Morden Joint Burial Board provides
burial accommodation at their Lower Morden Cemetery for the residents
of the two Urban Districts. During the year 163 interments were from
Carshalton. No unused accommodation is available in the parish churchyard,
interment there now being only by the re-opening of existing graves.
Following the constitution of the North-East Surrey Crematorium
Board, work proceeded on the adaptation as a crematorium of the former
chapel in the Battersea Cemetery in Lower Morden and was brought into
use in May, 1958. The Joint Board consists of representatives of the
Battersea, Sutton and Cheam, Carshalton and Merton and Morden Councils
and was brought into being in October, 1956 by the North-East Surrey
Crematorium Act.
The Council provide mortuary and post-mortem examination facilities
at their fully equipped mortuary in Mill Lane. During 1957, 134 bodies
were received into the mortuary on all of which autopsies were performed.
The number admitted from other districts was 57. During the last five
years, more than half the admissions were from districts other than Carshalton.
