Disinfection
Seventy-one rooms, 1 T.B. Shelter and 330 library books were disinfected.
Five lots of bedding were sterilised and five lots destroyed.
Vermin Control
Persons.
The Council maintains a cleansing station in Rochester Road for
dealing with individuals infested with pediculosis or scabies and their
personal clothing. During 1957 there were no cases of pediculosis treated
there, but 25 members of 5 families, of whom 11 were schoolchildren, made
120 attendances for the treatment of scabies. One of these families consisting
of 11 individuals became reinfested after an interval of 5 months
and received 2 courses of treatment during the year.

During the year, sixty-eight premises were treated for the destruction ofvermin and insect pests as follows :—

Clean Air Act, 1956
This comprehensive statutory measure gives local authorities new
powers and duties for the prevention of air pollution. The first provisions
to be brought into force on the 31st December, 1956 were those dealing,
inter alia, with—
Installation of new furnaces Pollution from spoil banks
Height of Chimneys Research and Publicity
Smoke Control Areas Making of Byelaws
Under these provisions new furnaces shall be, so far as practicable,
smokeless and regulations may be made by the Minister to require the
installation of meters for recording the density of smoke from furnaces.
Smoke control areas can with the consent of the Minister be declared by
local authorities in which it will be an offence to emit smoke. The cost of
adaptations of private dwellings to avoid such an offence will be partly met
by the local authority and may be assisted by an exchequer grant. Churches
and charities may be assisted in this respect at the discretion of the local
authority. The local authority may make Byelaws to require the provision
