These three samples all the product of the same Packer were found to
contain sand and other earthy matter to the extent of 0.07%, 0.20% and
0.02% respectively. There is no statutory standard, but the Public Analyst
expressed the view that cleaned dried fruit should not contain more than
0.01% of grit and earthy matter. The Packer undertook to withdraw
where possible all existing stocks and to subject future supplies to double
cleaning.
Section 9—Sale of Unfit Food for Human Consumption
Complaints were received of alleged foreign matter in the following
foodstuffs:
Dirt in bread (2)
Dark substance in bread (3)
Screw in bread
Nail in butter
Mould on cake
Dirty milk bottle (2)
Toy in milk
Mould on apricot pie
Wood in sausage
The circumstances did not justify legal proceedings, but appropriate
warnings were given where they were deemed necessary.
Inspection of Food

The following quantities of food found to be unsound, diseased or unwholesome and unfit for human food were surrendered and destroyed or so disposed of as to prevent them from being used for human food :

The method of disposal is by burning in the Council's Refuse
Destructor.
Inspection of Food Premises
Action taken as a result of visits of inspection to food premises is
shewn in Table 9.
