Whooping Cough
Whooping cough was less prevalent than in the year before. A total
of 101 cases was notified, all residents but three. This is only three more than
the record low incidence of 98 cases in 1952. The annual total of whooping
cough cases prior to the start of whooping cough immunisation, ranged
between 200 and 500 and although it is gratifying that prevalence should
have remained unusually low for two years in succession, it would be unsafe
to draw any conclusions as to the effect immunisation, to the extent at
present practised, is having upon the prevalence of whooping cough.
As previously reported, immunisation against this disease is available
under arrangements made by the County Council at the Infant Welfare
Clinics. At December 31st it is estimated that 47% of the children under
five years of age had at some time received this treatment. This is the
highest proportion so far achieved.
