Vermin Control
Persons.
Comment has been made in recent reports on the great improvement
which has occurred since the Second World War in the extent of verminous
conditions. This has been particularly marked in the parasitic conditions
affecting individuals and their personal clothing, mainly pediculosis and
scabies. During the war these conditions were so prevalent that the
Council established a Cleansing Station at Rochester Road, which dealt
with hundreds of individuals annually. This service is rarely needed now
and only for the occasional badly infested case. Although this is primarily
the result of the greatly reduced prevalence of verminous conditions, it has
been assisted by the use of modern parasiticides which can be used effectively
in the home and which are available under the Health Services.
During 1955 no cases of pediculosis were referred for treatment to the
Cleansing Station and only two individuals in one family of whom one
was a school child, were treated there for scabies. They made a total of
five attendances.
