Rivers and Streams
Routine work of maintenance on the River Wandle and its ponds was
carried out by the County Council who are the responsible authority. Two
complaints were received in respect of the river in Mill Lane and Ruskin
Road and were referred to the County authority.
Closet Accommodation
All properties have main drainage connected to the sewers except 17
in an unsewered part of the south-east ward which are drained to 13 cesspools.
Some difficulty was experienced in securing the emptying of a cesspool
in this part of the district. Consideration was being given at the end of
the year to providing a sewer for this area. There are no earth closets.
Public Cleansing
The arrangements for public cleansing were as shown in previous
reports namely—collection of refuse by a specially designed fleet of vehicles
with hydraulic tipping gears, and disposal by incineration in the Council's
6-cell destructor with tipping arrangements for residual clinker and
screenings.
Tipping at Barrow Hedges to form school playing fields was completed
in 1955. That effectively controlled tipping can be carried out without
complaint and risk to health, is shown by the successful way in which this
project was carried through. Past experience unfortunately provided not
a few instances of how necessary this means of disposal needs to be carefully
executed and supervised, if public health nuisance in an urban area is
to be avoided. Tipping is being continued in Mill Lane to form a future
playingfield forthe Public Pleasure Grounds Committeeand a similar process
is in progress to level ground in the open space bordering Revesby Road.
