INFANT MORTALITY
The deaths of 18 children who died under the age of one year were
registered, of which 10 were males and 8 females. These provide an infant
mortality rate of 23.5 per thousand live births compared with 18.2 in the
year before. The comparable rate for England and Wales was 24.9.
All were deaths of legitimate children.
Seventy-seven per cent. of the deaths occurred in the first month of life.
Congenital malformations, prematurity and diseases peculiar to infancy
accounted for 16 and infections for two.
The ward distribution of infant mortality and the causes of death are
shown in Tables 6 and 7.
