not infrequently contains non-fatty solids slightly below the statutory
limit. From experience of sampling in recent years, when emphasis
appears to be on yield rather than quality, this would appear to be a fact..
Health Salts
The analytical results of this sample did not agree with the declaration
of contents on the label. It was contended that the discrepancy
arose owing to the difficulty in dividing the sample into three identical
parts, as is required by the Act. The other two parts were submitted to
analysis and it was found that, taken as a whole, the sample conformed
with the label. This difficulty with regard to sampling procedure will be
obviated by the Food and Drugs Amendment Act, 1954 under which
the requirements to divide a sample into three equal parts shall be
deemed to be satisfied if three unopened containers of a food or drug
are secured and each is dealt with as if it were a part of the sample.
Vitamin Capsules
These were capsules of halibut liver oil which slightly exceeded the
limits of the British Pharmacopoeia standards, both in volume of content
and vitamin A activity. The manufacturers indicated that in the
light of the analyst's report they were increasing their production of
capsules made by a modified procedure which gives less out-graded
ones and were insisting on re-grading the capsules to prevent a recurrence.
As there had been no prejudice to the consumer, no further action
was indicated.
