Incoming tenants of Council houses as well as vacated Council
premises are visited by the Sanitary Inspectors before letting is effected
to ensure that verminous families are not admitted to clean houses
and vice versa.
Smoke Abatement and Atmospheric Pollution
Twelve complaints were received and dealt with during the year.
It was reported last year that in consequence of increasing quantities
of smoke and grit being discharged into the atmosphere, particularly from
industrial establishments, arrangements had been made to install 3
deposit gauges at sites selected in consultation with the Director of the
Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. These deposit gauges,
designed to measure the quantity of solid matter in the air, were operating
as from 1st January and were sited at Welbeck School (A),
Winchcombe School (B) and Limes Avenue (C). From the beginning of
October, apparatus to measure the volume of sulphur dioxide in the air
and a filter measuring the intensity of smoke by a colorimetric method
were installed in the grounds of the Public Health Department.
