In view of the difficulties in guaranteeing and maintaining minimum
Vitamin A potencies for fish oil preparations and Vitamin A concentrates
in general, no legal action was taken, but the manufacturers
agreed to increase the overage used in the manufacture of the product
by 36% to ensure that loss during normal storage periods will not bring
the Vitamin A content below that stated on the label.
Milk
A sample of Channel Island Milk which failed to comply with the
conditions set out in the Milk (Control and Maximum Prices) (Great
Britain) Order, 1947, the butter fat content being 3.74% instead of
4%.
In accordance with the Order the Ministry of Food were informed
of the Analyst's Report, but no further action was taken by them after
receiving the explanation of the Dairy Company concerned.
Milk (Seven Samples)
The above-mentioned samples with others were taken from a
supply produced at a local farm after information had been received
from a neighbouring authority regarding the fat content of milk supplied
from the farm to a purveyor in their district.
Of the seven samples taken, one was deficient in milk fat, three
deficient in milk fat and solids not fat and three deficient in solids not
fat only, by comparison with the legal standard of 3% fat and 8.5°/!
solids not fat. All the samples were taken direct from the cows so that
there was no doubt that the milk was genuine though of poor quality.
The vendor sought advice from the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries
via the Surrey County Council Agricultural Executive Committee.
