Shops Act, 1950
There are 520 shop premises on the register and 1,924 inspections
were made during the year.
Preliminary notices were served with regard to thirty infringements
of the Act.
During the year the Home Office and Scottish Department issued
suggested provisions for amending Shops legislation with regard to
shop closing hours and time off for adult shop assistants. The amending
legislation, however, was still under consideration by the Government
at the end of the year.
Heating Appliances (Fireguards) Regulations, 1953
These regulations came into force on the 1st October and require
that fireguards be fitted to gas fires, electric fires and oil heaters of
types so designed that they are suitable for domestic use and so constructed
that, without a guard, there is likelihood of injury by burning
or of ignition of clothing by reason of contact with or proximity to the
heating element or flame. Prescribed standards are laid down to which
guards must comply. All such appliances must, by October 1st, 1954,
comply with these standards.
