Diphtheria.
No case of diphtheria was notified during the year either in the
resident population or among hospital patients resident elsewhere.
Although, as a result of the immunisation scheme, the annual
incidence of diphtheria had fallen to negligible proportions in the
last few years, this is the first year in which there was a complete
absence of this infection.

Prevalence among the resident population since 1934 covering the whole period during which the immunisation scheme has been in operation was as follows:—

The number of swabs examined for diphtheria was 29.

Diphtheria Immunisation.
The scheme for diphtheria immunisation, which is the responsibility
of the County Coucil, is by agreement directed by the Medical
Officer of Health of the District Council. The arrangements were
as described in the previous Report, namely, facilities at the infant
welfare and school clinics and a programme of immunisation sessions
held in the infant and junior schools of the district in alternate terms.
The object is to secure initial treatment by the age of one year and
