The following premises were dealt with for bed bug infestation:
| Method. | Council Houses. | Other Houses. | Civil Defence Premises. | Total. |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spraying with Insecticide Solution | 1 | 16 | 7 | 24 |
Eight lots of bedding were sterilised and five destroyed.
Six houses were sprayed by the L.C.C.
Normally, hydrogen cyanide fumigation is used in appropriate
cases and is carried out by arrangement with a private contractor.
Where possible all furniture, etc., of prospective Council house
tenants suspected or found to be verminous, is treated separately
with hydrogen cyanide, but in extensive infestations it is done in and
with the house before removal. Owing to the contractors being
employed on Government work no cyanide fumigation was carried
out during the year. The alternative method of spraying with insecticidal
solutions, such as Zaldecide or Solution D, more suited to
minor degrees of infestation, or where conditions do not allow of the
cyanide process, is performed by the staff of the Department.
Pest Control.
No sprayings were done for the destruction of mosquito lava:.
Forty wasp nests inside and adjacent to dwellings were destroyed
at the cost of the complainants.
Twelve premises were sprayed to destroy fleas, crickets and cockroaches.
Rats and Mice (Destruction) Act, 1919.
Ministry of Food Infestation Order, 1943 (S.R. & O. 680).
Under the above Act and Order the Council were directed on
11th June, 1943, to administer the provisions contained therein
in an effort to destroy the rat pest and for the protection of food
supplies. Following the complete survey for rat infestation made
of the district in 1943 the whole of the directions continued to be
administered and a full time rodent operator, acting under the direction
of the Chief Sanitary Inspector, was employed.
A total of 3,679 investigations were made, whilst 145 complaints
in respect of rats and 55 of mice were dealt with.
