Treatment by hydrogen cyanide is undertaken by arrangement
with a private firm. Fumigation by spraying is done by the
Council's staff, the insecticide used being either Solution " D "
or Zaldecide.
The homes of prospective tenants for Council houses are visited
and where verminous conditions are found or suspected, the household
effects are treated with hydrogen cyanide in the removal
van before being unloaded into the new dwelling. Five van loads
of furniture were dealt with in this way during the year.
Tenants known to have been verminous at one time are visited
periodically with a view to preventing re-infestation. The Council
houses are supervised by the Council's Estates Manager.
Mosquito Control.
Water places in the district owned by the Council were sprayed
during the months of February and April to destroy or prevent the
breeding of mosquito larvae.
Rats and Mice (Destruction) Act, 1919.
The annual campaign was organised by the Chief Sanitary
Inspector during the second week in November.
The district was posted with double crown posters ; chemists
and hardware merchants were supplied with rat destruction literature
and details for circulation ; advertisements were issued in the
local press ; the whole of the sewers in the district were baited
with rat bait and premises (both privately owned and owned by
the Council) where infestations had occurred or were likely to
occur were visited.
Smoke Abatement.
Four complaints of alleged nuisance from smoke were received
and these were effectively dealt with without the necessity of any
statutory action.
Schools.
The Department works in co-operation with the County School
Medical Service in the control of infectious disease among school
children, and in all sanitary matters affecting their health. Policy
