Domiciliary and Institutional Births. Table 2 classifies
the 899 total births (live and still) which occurred during the year
according to whether they took place in hospitals, nursing homes,
etc., or in private houses.
The number which took place in hospitals and maternity homes
rose from 264 in 1936 to 337, which raises the percentage of the
total from 29 to 37. The percentages for the individual wards
were as follows:
St. Helier North 28.1
St. Helier South 27.5
St. Helier West 23.5
North-East 44.6
North-West 39.2
Central 50.0
South-East 51.0
South-West 56.9
The higher figures in respect of the wards other than those
of St. Helier are accounted for by the greater proportion of births
which took place in private nursing homes.

The 337 non-domiciliary births took place in the following

institutions:
