In 1961 the employment position was satisfactory. There was
no significant change in employment figures compared with the
previous year, but slightly more unemployed in the summer months.
There was an unsatisfied demand for skilled workers, particularly in
the engineering industry.
Virtually no building land is available except for the Phipps
Bridge scheme of about 776 houses and flats. The first stage comprising
72 flats and a laundry is nearing completion and it is hoped
that the first flat will be ready for occupation in the autumn of 1962.
