Liquid Egg (Pasteurisation) Regulations 1963
These Regulations were made jointly by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and
Food and the Ministry of Health and came into force on the 1st January, 1964. They
require that liquid whole egg must be pasteurised before use as an ingredient in the
preparation of food and only pasteurised liquid egg may be imported. Tests are
prescribed with which pasteurised liquid egg must comply. The Regulations do not
deal with liquid egg albumen as at present it is difficult to prescribe a test which
will show whether satisfactory pasteurisation has been carried out.
Considerable quantities of imported liquid egg come direct to a cold store in the
Borough and sampling is carried out by the Public Health Department.
1,191 tons passed through Tottenham during 1963, and of this 471 tons was
accompanied by certificates of pasteurisation issued by the country of origin. 146
samples were taken for bacteriological examination, of which 9 were positive as
follows:-

Distribution of the batches from which the positive samples were taken were held
up until the consignor could arrange for pasteurisation at an approved establishment
under the supervision of the health authority.
Condemned Food
A large amount of food is dealt with by the Public Health Inspectors. Most of
this is surrendered by the local wholesalers, with some from retailers. A certificate
from the Public Health Department that articles or consignments are unsound, due
perhaps to decomposition, is a document necessary to tradesmen in dealing with their
suppliers. The following articles were dealt with: -
