Clubs
The four clubs continue to flourish, and there is now a total membership of
approximately 520. Each club enjoyed the summer outings and Christmas parties. The
Entertainments Committee arranged concerts for each of the clubs.
Meals are served at the St. Ann's Memorial Hall and the Lord Morrison Hall clubs
twice weekly, and during the year a total of 8,393 meals were provided.
Holidays and Outings
During the year 190 pensioners enjoyed a week's holiday at holiday camps, the
first party being in May to Dymchurch followed by another in September to Minster.
The cost of the holidays were approximately £5.15.0d. including return coach fare from
the Town Hall, payments were made each week to the office to cover the cost of this.
With the co-operation of the Women's Holiday Fund 50 pensioners were able to
enjoy a holiday by the sea at a minimum cost of £4.10. 0d. per fortnight including fare.
Many outings have been arranged for the housebound, due to the generosity of local
organisations. The ladies of the Inner Wheel arranged an afternoon tea and entertainment
on two occasions, and due to the generosity of Messrs. Ardleys and the legacy
received from the late Mr. Tant it was possible to give an afternoon drive and tea to
sixty-eight housebound people.
A Christmas much generosity was shown to pensioners. The Prince of Wales's
Hospital arranged for lonely old people to attend a pantomine and tea on Boxing Day.
Local residents also showed hospitality to many old people and two local schools
arranged for parcels to be taken to those who were unable to go out.
Harvest Festival
Local schools and churches again, very kindly gave their harvest festival produce
for distribution to the old people, and a total of 650 parcels were packed and delivered
to the sick, housebound and club members.
Christmas Parcels
Approximately 1,500 parcels were packed and delivered by voluntary effort to those
who were housebound or over eighty years of age.
Optical Service
This service proves very helpful to housebound people and 30 housebound people
were visited.
Shoe Repairs
Unfortunately pensioners do not appear to take advantage of this service, and
only 3 dockets were issued during the year.
