Outworkers
Regular visits were made by the public health inspectors to the homes of persons
notified to the department as outworkers in accordance with the provisions of sections
110 and 111 of the Factories Act, 1937.
The following is a summary of the types of work undertaken by outworkers in the
Borough:-

Curtains & furniture hangings 1
Unbrellas 1
Artifical flowers 15
Paper bags 4
Cardboard boxes 23
Brushes 23
Boxing, carding of buttons 6
Christmas crackers & stockings 20
Lamp shades 1
68 visits were made during 1961 to outworkers' premises. No contraventions were
reported.
Shops
Inspections of shop premises under the Shops Act, 1950 have been carried out
during the year. Also, observations have been made during week ends and in late
evening to ensure that the regulations are complied with. Modernisation of many
shop premises has taken place during the past year. Some departmental stores now
take advantage of the High Court decision given in the Brighton Corporation v. Fine
Fare Ltd. case recently and open all day Thursday (Wednesday in Harringay), closing
all day Monday.
Inspections
1726 shops have been inspected, prescribed notices, records of employment, etc.,
have been examined and all necessary information obtained. An up to date register of
shops has been maintained. 1957 male assistants and 2563 female assistants, and 132
male and 299 female young persons were employed at the premises inspected.
