Meals-on-Wheels
Here again there is another increase in this very necessary Service, so
that now meals are delivered into the homes of the sick and housebound on
four days each week.
The Committee organise delivery on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays,
and the Women's Voluntary Services on Fridays.
Meals delivered this year were-
Old People s Welfare Committee 6,459
W.V.S. 5,724
Optical Service
Requests for help come from many sources including the Officers of the
National Assistance Board who often notice the difficulty the old people
have with reading. 22 housebound old people have been visited by the
Optician who has tested their eyes at home and there is no doubt this service
has been of great help.
Shoe Repairs
7 dockets have been issued to enable old people to get footwear repaired
at a reduced rate.
Visiting
Several voluntary visitors have been enrolled during the year, but
because they are mostly at work during the day, they can only visit one or
two people each week. Many lonely old people are also visited by members of
other organizations, i.e. the Churches, W.V.S., the British Red Cross, and
sick visitors attached to the O.A.P. Associations and Old People's Clubs.
Borough Services for the Aged
Baths
Old people are allowed to use the public sitz baths free of charge.
Library Service
By means of the Libraries Service Van, 47 housebound old people were
visited regularly during the year and deliveries total 4,732. The old
people were first visited by a member of the staff to ascertain the type of
books they prefer and in some cases the books were actually delivered to the
bedside of the readers.
