(Gautier) method of Diastolisation with Oscillator-Vibration,
introduced to this country by Mr. A. G. Wells, London, gives most
excellent and lasting results. This method has been extensively
used in Tottenham for both pre-school and school children, suffering
from nasal defects solely, and also those cases of Otorrhoea complicated
by nasal affections. The method, based on sound physiological
principles, briefly consists—after preliminary nasal toilet—
of a delicate intra-nasal massage with specially made (French)
soft rubber, hollow diastello bougies, alternately inflated and
deflated by a compression bulb for 10 to 15 minutes, followed by a
coiled wire vibrator, inserted in the hollow bougie—operated from
an electro magnet, for 1 minute in each nostril. This is repeated
twice a week. A knowledge of the pathological conditions present,
principles involved, and a correct technique are essential.
Recent study in nasal diseases has found that infection of the
nasal sinuses (the fore-runner of catarrh and diseased tonsils and
adenoids) in children, including pre-school children, is much more
frequent than was formerly believed. It is a serious condition
if neglected. Modern methods of diagnosis have made its presence
more easily detected. The latest method for the diagnosis and
treatment of this condition is Proetz' method of "Displacement."
It consists of emptying the nasal sinuses of muco-pus under negative
pressure and replacing with a weak solution of Ephedrine. The
apparatus is installed at the Clinic and a large number of children
are being treated with gratifying results. Its great use lies in the
fact that it is curative as well as diagnostic.
In addition, Well's (New York) "Iodine Vapour" inhalation
is regularly used in suitable cases.
Gramophone Audiometer.—For the early detection of
deafness in children and the control of the progress of improvement
in those treated, the new Western Electric Gramophone
Audiometer has been a valuable acquisition.
A periodical survey of the school children is carried out and
all "failures," i.e., those with a loss of more than 9 decibels are
referred to the Clinic for examination and treatment. A
