and carry out any required treatment such as Diastolisation, Displacement,
Antiseptic Treatment, etc. There is no break in the
continuity of treatment or misunderstanding as to what should
be done.
In addition to the treatment of ear disease in infants, pre-school
and school children, the Aural Clinic now embraces the examination
and treatment of nasal defects and deafness in these age-groups.
This provision is of very material importance in the prevention
and arrest of deafness in later life. A considerable amount of the
defective hearing found in adult life, more especially what is known
as "catarrhal" deafness can be traced to neglected aural or nasal
defects in early life.
The early detection and correction of such conditions as Otitis,
Sinusitis, Nasal Obstruction and Catarrh in young children is
very important, for these conditions left untreated lead directly to
the more serious consequences of impaired hearing and defective
nasal respiration which has a detrimental effect on both mental
and bodily health.
For the early detection and adequate treatment of such
conditions as Otitis Media and its complications; nasal infections
and sequelae—impaired hearing, etc., modern scientific methods
and procedures are essential to obtain successful results. For this
purpose the Aural Clinic is now furnished with the latest approved
scientific apparatus and methods, and the staff in attendance are
trained in the use and technique of these procedures.
In the treatment of suppurative Otitis, especially the Chronic
type, Zinc Ionisation (or Iontophoresis) is the standard treatment,
and no other method can compare with it for rapid and successful
results. But to obtain these results it undoubtedly requires skill
and strict attention to detail in technique, and careful selection
of cases. A point of importance to emphasise here, in the treatment
of chronic otorrhoea, is the concurrent treatment of any
associated factors contributing to the chronicity.
For nasal catarrh, obstruction and rhinitis with resultant nasal
respiratory insufficiency and defective hearing, the modern French
