Attendances, at first, were discouraging but have recently improved
considerably, and the average attendance, at the time of writing is,
approximately, 18 per session. That the need for such clinics is a real
one is shown by the large number of defects discovered, and many children
have been referred to the specialist clinics for treatment of dental,
ophthalmic and orthopaedic defects and to outside institutions for removal
of tonsils and adenoids, for ultra-violet light treatment, and for the
treatment of constitutional disease. The table given below shows the
high rate of acceptances of treatment. The provision of a solarium at
the new Orchard House Clinic will greatly facilitate artificial sunlight
therapy in the Borough. Advice is also given to mothers in connection
with nutrition, personal hygiene and in regard to diphtheria immunisation.
An increasing number of children are now being sent to school
between the ages of four and five years and their medical record cards are
forwarded to the School Medical Department to ensure continuity of
medical supervision.
It is proposed, in the near future, to include in the routine examination
of Toddlers, tests for gross errors of refraction.
It is hoped that by the discovery, as early as possible, of cases of hypermetropia or myopia,
followed by early reference to the Ophthalmic Surgeon, that the development of squint in
later life may be prevented. Similarly, it is hoped to refer cases of high astigmatism or
anisometropia before an irremediable amount of amblyopia is present.
