Medical and dental inspections are carried out by the officers of the
Wood Green Education Authority, in whose area the school is situated.
Open-Air Classes.
The open-air class for girls held annually from May to October in
Downhills Park bandstand was continued during the summer of 1938.
Children are recommended for attendance at this class by doctors, teachers
and school nurses, and all are medically examined before being admitted,
and again when the class is closed in October. The majority of the
girls showed considerable improvement in health after a period of open-air
education.
Orchard House open-air class for boys was closed down at the end
of July owing to the requisition of the site for building purposes. The
pupils were transferred after the summer vacation to an open-air classroom
at Risley Avenue School annexe, where arrangements include a
mid-day meal at Lancasterian Meals Centre followed by a rest period.
School Journeys.
Eight schools organised school Journeys to seaside resorts. The
duration of stay varied from one to two weeks, and 295 pupils participated
in this form of open-air education. In addition, four parties, each
consisting of 20 boys, from Culvert, Lancasterian, Page Green and Risley
Avenue Schools were sent for a fortnight on school Journeys to Suntrap
School. All these children were medically examined prior to their
departure from Tottenham.
Yale Road Nursery School.
This school was opened on August 31st, 1937, in a newly constructed
building and by the end of 1938 all available accommodation (100 places)
was filled, with a list of children awaiting admission.
