speech-training classes are held for stammerers, in attendance at ordinary
elementary schools, who visit the School for the Deaf for two lessons
per week.
Ambulance transport, to and from the school, is available for certain
scholars, while the remainder walk or travel by bus or train in the charge
of guides.
Milk is supplied during the morning break, and a hot two-course
dinner cooked on the premises is provided at mid-day.
All scholars are placed in situations by the Head Mistress on leaving
school.
Medical and dental inspection and treatment of all pupils in this
school is carried out by the officers of the Tottenham Education
Committee.
Vale Road School for Physically Defective Children.
The number of places available at this school has been increased
to 96, and these were all occupied at the end of the year.
The accommodation is inadequate to meet the exigencies of this
type of school. There is too little floor space for the requisite number
of couches, and it is impossible to move these out of the building.
Facilities for open-air education and cookery are insufficient, as are
cloakrooms and ablution arrangements. Manual training for the older
boys is obtained at Stamford Hill Boys' School, and as access to this
school is by means of a road having a considerable gradient, the journey
to and from the manual centre is not unattended by difficulties. A trained
nurse is attached to the school and does not leave the premises except
to accompany children to hospitals and clinics.
Oak Lodge School for Mentally Defective Children.
During the year 1938 there have been 71 Tottenham children in
attendance at this school. Of these, 5 were excluded by the School
Medical Officer as unsuitable. Most of these children had been sent to
the school "on trial," and upon re-examination were found to be unable
to benefit by education at a Special School.
