Maternity and Child Welfare Committee.
April, 1936.
Madam Chairman,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Herewith is submitted the Annual Report for the year 1936, of the
activities of the Officers and Staff under your jurisdiction.
Your Superintendent Health Visitor, Mrs. Kent-Parsons, was
honoured by His Late Majesty by having had conferred upon her the
Membership of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.
The alterations that have taken place during 1935 have been rather
by way of expanding the existing work than by addition of new ventures.
Thus an additional session is now given at Bruce Castle under
Dr. Alice King, making 3 sessions each at the two Infant- Welfare Centres.
It will be observed that Orthopaedic clinic® have been added to the
School Medical Servioe. Children under school age will have the
advantage O'f such assistance as these clinics can afford.
A fund was established by means of which enfeebled mothers are
sent to coast and country for convalescent treatment.
The fund was commenced by a grant, of .£50' from the Borough Council
Jubilee Celebration Fund, and the mothers attending the Centres marked
their appreciation by a donation of £6 6s. 0'd.
The number of births in 1935 were 55 fewer than in 1934, and
although the actual number of deaths under one year of age was the
same—108—the infant mortality rate is greater by 3.2
On the other hand, the Maternal Mortality was only 2.9 per 1,000
births, whereas in the preceding year it was 5.1
