Part-time courses are being planned for selected teachers from all
types of schools, and these will be held in the Spring Term, 1935.
Arrangements are also being made for the provision of mobile apparatus
necessary to give full effect to the Board of Education Syllabus, 1933.
Swimming Instruction.
Swimming instruction has continued throughout the year at the
Indoor Bath at the Town Hall, and during the Summer Season at the
Open-air Bath. The number of awards of certificates for swimming
various distances continues to be highly gratifying. No less than 2,579
such certificates were gained by pupils of the schools during the year
(ending 31st March, 1934).
PROVISION OF MEALS.
The arrangements for associating the School Medical Service with
the work by the Education Committee under Sections 82—84 of the
Education Act, 1921, particularly as regards the selection of children for
meals, the approval of dietaries, the suitability, adequacy, and results
of the arrangements made, remain as they have been for several years.
During the year ended 31st December, 1934, 279,599 dinners were
provided to children in the Schools. Of these, 265,128 were provided
free to children of necessitous parents, and 14,471, on payment, to
children in Central Schools. In addition, 5,966 cod liver oil and malt
"meals" were given to children attending Special Schools or Open-Air
Classes.
There has been a large increase in the supply of morning milk. The
average number of children receiving milk daily during the year was
12,422—12 172 on payment, under the voluntary schemes organised by
the Head Teachers of 68 school departments, and 250 free, on the
recommendation of the School Medical Officer.
CO-OPERATION OF PARENTS, TEACHERS, SCHOOL
ATTENDANCE OFFICERS AND VOLUNTARY BODIES.
The methods employed to enlist the assistance of each group are the
same as in 1930.
