Holidays for the Handicapped

After circularising all registered handicapped persons, the final holiday arrangements for 1967/68were as indicated below:-

Total number of persons and relations to be assisted with holidays. 114
Estimated cost to the Borough of this project in the year under
review £1,020.
The sum of £2,000 (gross) is included in the revenue estimates 1968/69
for the holiday scheme against which provision is made for an estimated
income of £1,000.
Voluntary Organisations and Social Activities
During the year close association has been maintained
with all the voluntary bodies in the Borough working in the field of
services for the handicapped. In particular the Sutton Association
for the Disabled, the British Red Cross, the Townswomen's Guilds and
many^locaL Church organisations have done valuable work assisting with
exhibitions, sales of work, coffee mornings, Help the Disabled Week
and many other activities.
Care of the Deaf
The number of deaf and hard of hearing on the register
is now ll6compared with 90 in the previous year.
Work in this field is carried out by general social work
staff, one of whom attended a specialist course dealing with the subject.
Deaf welfare is one of the fields in which expansion is required and
consideration will be given to this as part of the development of
Welfare Services generally.
Care of the Blind and Partially Sighted
The total number of registered persons on 31st December 1967
was:—
Blind 350, Partially-Sighted 80, making a total of 430.
The corresponding figures for last year were Blind 347, Partially-Sighted 65
making a total of 412.
