CERVICAL CYTOLOGY
During the year the scheme for cervical screening for the detection
of precancerous changes was continued. The number of smears dealt with per
week was increased from 24 to 30. These examinations were carried out
at the six major Health Centres in the Borough and, as before all applicants
had first to obtain the consent of their General Practitioner before the
smear was taken. The General Practitioner was subsequently notified of the
result.
In each case complete pelvic examination and breast examination,
urine testing and blood pressure recording was routinely carried out. There
were no changes in the types of cases who qualified for cervical cytology
which are as follows
(1) Any cases referred from post-natal clinics who were over 25 years
of age and had more than one child.
(2) Cases making direct application provided they were over 25 years
of age and had more than one child.
(3) Cases referred from the Family Planning Clinics who had applied there
for cytology only.
(4) Any patient referred by a general practitioner.
(5) Mothers of large families.
