It is gratifying to record that the majority of the traders continue to
show a willing co-operation to comply with the requirements of the
Regulations. Mention must also be made that the standard of hygiene in
the various food premises and the cleanliness of the persons engaged in
the handling of food is much improved, but constant vigilance is necessary.
Prosecutions
Food Hygiene Regulations, 1955 to 1960
No proceedings were taken during the year under these Regulations.
Complaints Regarding Food Unfit for Human Consumption
The following comments are made in connection with complaints
received and investigated during the year which did not warrant legal
proceedings being taken, but appropriate action was taken in each case
as found to be necessary.
It will be seen that in some instances the nature of the complaint was
not confirmed by examination.
Caramels - burning sensation - sweets analysed - not harmful
Corned Beef - Leak in seam of tin confirmed
Cream "not fresh" - prolonged low temperature storage
Dead insect in cheese sandwich - circumstances doubtful
Deposit in loaf - carbonised oil from bread tin.
Deposits in loaves (2) - Grease particles from plant
Deposit in milk bottle - Dairy warned
Dirt on cheese - externally - Retailer warned
Glass in Jam Tarts - Found to be crystalised sugar deposits
Glass in "Snowball" - Found to be undissolved flaked albumen
Live larva in sugar - moth larva - Origin doubtful - probably household
Metal cap in Milk Bottle - Dairy warned
Metal in loaf - about ½"long - Bakery warned
Metal in Mixed Cereal (Swiss) - From rotary cutter. Warned
Mould in Bread - Condition appeared after purchase
Mouldy loaf - delay in submitting for examination
Mouldy loaf - not mould but grease deposit - Bakery warned
Nail in Marmalade - Found to be calyx from orange
Odorous Fish Cakes - Cheese onion fritters sold in error for fish cakes
Particles in Baby food - Not confirmed by tests
Pork Pie - Slight mould - Manufacturer and retailer warned
Pork Pies - 3 purchased, 1 slightly mouldy - Manufacturer and retailer warned
School Canteen - Beef - Slightly 'Heated' - Exchanged by Butcher
Sediment in Milk - Found to be tea leaves - circumstances doubtful
Sponge Flan - Specks of mould - retailer warned
Stained Milk Bottle - Dairy warned
Stale Pork Sausages - Sold in error by new assistant - warned
String in loaf - Confirmed from flour sack - Bakery warned
Sugar "Nasty Taste" - contaminated with 4% table salt - Household suspected
Tinned Meat - Mould - perforated tin - confirmed
Tobacco in loaf - Found to be streaks of brown dough in white loaf
Unfit lamb - Too long delay before submitting for examination
Unfit Sausages - Delay in examination - Received by post
Wire in Bakewell Tart - Cake decoration, base wire. Warning
