immunisation with toxoid before injury Immunisation against Tetanus can
be given separately , or, in children, preferably combined with immunisation
against Diphtheria and Whooping Cough and must be sustained by
reinforcing injections at appropriate intervals A record of the dates of
injection should always be carried on the person During 1962, nine hundred
and nine children received primary injections, and five hundred and eighty
four children received reinforcing injections
It is also very desirable that all who work in agriculture or in stables
should be immunised
Food Poisoning Five cases were notified in 1962, compared with two
cases in 1961 The cases were in one family and were caused by an
unidentified agent The illness fallowed attendance at a wedding reception
outside the Borough, other guests also being affected
The low incidence of infections, due to Salmonellae and Staphylococci
in food is satisfactory, Prevention of infection depends on scrupulous
cleanliness in the production, storage, manufacture and distribution of
food. The washing of hands after use of ,the W.C. is the most effective
protective measure against intestinal carriers of infection Early
notification of cases of food poisoning necessary so as to obtain the
residue of suspected^food for bacteriological examination. No food handler
should ever be allowed.to return to work without bacteriological clearance.
Dysentery. There was one case of Dysentery in 1962, compared with
two cases in 1961, It was of the Sonne type, and occurred in a woman of
forty, three. The illness started towards the end of a three weeks' holiday
in Ireland.
Sonne Dysentery is a highly infectious form of gastroenteritis.
The infection is spread by faecal contamination of hands, objects, and in
particular, lavatory seats. Prevention, depends on the washing ofhands
after use of the WC. and on the efficient cleansing of communal W.C s.
in,schools and public places.
It is most desirable-that all cases, of diarrhoea should be checked
bacteriologically.
Typhoid and Paraeyphoid Fevers. One case of Typhoid occurred in a
woman of twenty five. The infection was obtained by eating cockles when
on holiday at a seaside resort,
MeningococcaMnfecrion. One case was notified. It occurred in a young
lady of eighteen in the first quarter of the year.
Poliomyelitis The year 1962 was the fourth successive year the
Borough has been free from this infection. The numbers of Poliomyelitis
cases and deaths in England and Walles were Approximately one third only
of, those for 1961. Sabin Oral Poliomyelitis. Vaccine was introduced towards
the end of March and could be used in place.Af theSalk Poliomyelitis
Vaccine for the same priority groups. Undoubtedly the sugar lump or
syrup would prove a popular exchange for the previous injection with the
children, and it is to be hoped will help ma,intain or increase-the number
vaccinated in order to continue our record maintained over the past four
years.
