Prosecutions
(a) Food Hygiene Regulations, 1955 to 1960
No proceedings were taken during the year under these Regulations.
(b) Food and Drugs Act, 1955
Proceedings were taken under Section 2 of the Act for selling to the
prejudice of the purchaser food not of the substance demanded as follows
(a) Selling a bottle of milk containing a horse-chestnut - Case
dismissed.
(b) Selling a 'Steak and Kidney' pie in a mouldy condition
Fine £10 with £5. 5s. 0d. costs.
In addition two cases were pending at the year end - (a) Selling five
unwrapped 'Hovis' loaves affected by>bird droppings, and (b) Selling mixed
salad containing a piece of glass.
Complaints Regarding Food Unfit for Human Consumption
The following is a summary of various complaints received and
investigated during the year.
The general circumstances of these cases did not warrant legal
proceedings being taken, but each case was considered on its merits and
appropriate action taken where necessary.
Barley sugar sweets - contained head of wasp
Beef (English) Abnormal odour and taste in meat.
Information supplied by a Rural District in Essex supported
opinion held that animal had ingested material suspected of
having a phenol constituent
Bread - contained old dough deposits
Dirty milk bottles - 3 complaints
Extraneous sand deposits in unwashed cockles
Fly in cheddar cheese - origin not established
Fly particles in bread rolls - 2 complaints
Fly in tinned steak. - origin not established
Foreign matter in cream jars - 2 complaints
Glass particle in ice cream block - origin doubtful
Glass particles in marmalade - origin not established
Glass in tinned prawns - found to be tartar crystals
Grease deposits in bread - 2 complaints
Imported potatoes - suspected contamination - not established
Mixed salad - contained piece of glass
Mould deposit in plastic lemon container
Mouldy bread - (wrapped)
Mouldy cooked chicken
Mouldy pork pies - 2 complaints
Old metal cap in milk bottle
Pellets of solder in imported tinned milk
Pork sausages - contained strand of meat wrapping cloth
Rancid fish paste
Rubber ring in imported butter - part of plant machinery
Steam fly in loaf of bread - (unwrapped)
Stone in currant bun - origin - dried fruit
Turkey (cooked) - decomposition - insufficiently cooked
Wasps in imported tinned pineapple
Wasps in wrapped bread
