Sutton and Cheam 1961

Drainage. During the year the relief surface water sewer in Sutton
High Street, between Benhill Avenue and Burnell Road, and the relief
surface water sewer in Morden Way have been completed. Both of these
schemes have been constructed to overcome flpoding which had been
experienced at intervals. In the latter part of the year work commenced on
the construction of the Cuddington Way soil relief sewer, and this will be
completed by the Spring of 1962.
Rivers and Streams. The streams within the Borough have been
maintained in a satisfactory condition.
Refuse Collection and Cleansing. The scheme which commenced in
1960 for the haulage of refuse from the areas of both Mitcham and Sutton
and Cheam Councils to the controlled tip at Buckland has proceeded
throughout the year.
Closet Accommodation There is only one cesspool in use in the
Borough, and one septic tank.
Since 1928, one hundred and sixty two premises, originally with
cesspool drainage, have been connected to sewers
Only two pail closets and three chemical closets are in use, not
including those in temporary use on new building sites.
