and refilled with mains water on three occasions during the Summer months.
A small pressure filter and chlorinator was in use and a complete
circulation of water was obtained every eight hours. Owing to the
infrequent use of the pool, only one sample of the water was taken for
bacteriological examination, which was found to be satisfactory.
DRAINAGE AND SEWERAGE
Worcester Park Sewage Disposal Works. It was not possible to
proceed with the cleaning out of the existing sludge digestion tank and
the repair of the mechanism therein during 1960, and it is now intended
that this will be carried out during 1961.
The design of Stage III of the Reconstruction Scheme including the
construction of a Generating Station and the construction of a Low Level
Pumping Station is nearing completion and it is anticipated that work will
commence during 1961.
The effluent being discharged to the Beverley Brook is of reasonable
quality.
Sutton Sewage Disposal Works. During the year work has been
carried out to old tanks to enable a tertiary treatment system to be
operated. This has resulted in an effluent of very good quality being
discharged to the Pylbrook.
Drainage. No major work of sewerage has been carried out during
the year, but it is anticipated that during 1961 work will take place on the
following Schemes
Relief surface water sewer for a portion of the High Street, Sutton;
relief surface water sewer in Morden Way; soil sewer in Cuddington Way;
and soil sewer from Ventnor Road to Downs Road, Belmont.
Rivers and Streams. The streams within the Borough have been
maintained in a satisfactory condition.
Refuse Collection and Cleansing. The collection and disposal
of house refuse, together with the cleansing of public highways, is
carried out under the supervision of the Borough Engineer and Surveyor.
The controlled refuse tip at Ridge Road was closed in September on
completion of the Council's refuse transfer depot. Mitcham Corporation
deliver all the refuse from their area to the transfer station where the
Mitcham and Sutton refuse is loaded into bulk haulage vehicles which
then convey the refuse to a tip outside the Borough.
Closet Accommodation. There is only one cesspool in use in the
Borough, and one septic tank.
In the past thirty-two years, one hundred and sixty two premises,
originally with cesspool drainage, have been connected to sewers.
Only two pail closets and three chemical closets are in use, not
including those in temporary use on new building sites.
