(2) Treatment for year 1959-1960
The usual Test Baiting and First Maintenance Treatment
(1959-1960) were not carried out by my Department, as in July
1959 the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food approached
the Council with a request that they should be permitted to carry
out two experimental rat control treatments in parts of the
Borough's sewers.
Two separate poisons, sodium fluoracetate and fluoracetamide
would be used, in the two areas chosen.
On the 21st July, the Council gave it's approval of the
scheme and on the 16th November the Ministry commenced the first
stage of the treatments. This consisted of taking a census of
the rat population feeding on wheat prebait at 30 selected manholes
situated in each of the two areas of the Borough.
The areas chosen for the experiments consisted of
(a) the "Sutton Area" enclosed by the Carshalton and
Cheam Road, the St. Heller and Wimbledon Branch
line of the British Railways, All Saint's Road,
Benhill Road, St. Barnabas Road and
(b) the "Worcester Park Area" enclosed by London
Road, Tudor Avenue, Sandrlngham Road, Lynwood
Drive, Green Lane, Browning Avenue, Ebbisham Road,
Burnham Drive.
The result of this census showed that there were substantial
numbers of rats infesting the sewers of the Worcester Park Area
and to a lesser degree the sewers of the Sutton Area.
It has been arranged for the first of the poison treatments
to be carried out in January 1960 and the second treatment in
March 1960 followed by a final census on the original 30 manholes
of each area in April 1960.
The outcome of this experiment is awaited with great
interest.
