Swimming Baths. There are two public swimming baths in
Sutton and Cheam. The Maiden Road Baths, Cheam, was opened In
1938, and so is reasonably modern. It is open between April and
September, and in winter it Is converted into a fine public hall.
The Throwley Road Baths, Sutton, is much older and has
changing cubicles round the sides of the bath. It is open all
the year round.

Both work on a continuous cycle of pressure filtration and
chlorination, the actual water being emptied out once a year and
the Baths being refilled with mains water.
Records are kept at both Baths showing the number of bathers,
water temperature and residual chlorine levels at various times
during the day and from these it was clear that an adequate
degree of chlorination was being maintained. Three samples were
taken from each bath for bacteriological examination and showed
a standard of purity as would be expected from a scrutiny of the
records.
In addition a new learner swimming bath was opened at
Avenue Road County Primary School, Belmont Rise, Belmont during
the year. It is 50 feet by 15 feet by 2 feet 9 inches to 3 feet
deep, and holds 13,500 gallons. The cost was borne by money
raised by the children and parents. A small pressure filtration
plant and chlorinometer has been included.
The pool will be subjected to sampling and check tests,
commencing in 1960.
DRAINAGE AND SEWERAGE
Worcester Park Sewage Disposal Works. The Sludge digestion
tank constructed under Stage II of the Reconstruction Scheme was
brought into commission during the year and the cleaning out of
the existing tank and the repair of the mechanism therein will
be proceeding shortly. It is hoped that the full sludge disposal
unit will be in operation by mid-1960.
