To comply with the Milk (Special Designation) (Raw Milk)
Regulations 1949-1954 Tuberculin Tested Milk must not decolourise
Methylene Blue within 4½ hours if the sample is taken from 1st
May to 31st October, or within 5½ hours if taken from 1st November
to 30th April.
Of the one hundred and sixteen samples taken for bacteriological
examination only five failed to pass the prescribed tests.
Three of these samples were taken during the 4½ hours test period
and decolourised methylene blue in 3, 3½ and 4½ hours respectively.
The other two samples taken during the 5½ hour period failed the
test by a narrow margin.
In the case of farm bottled milk it is the practice
immediately to notify any failures to the dairy company, so that
the matter may be taken up with the responsible producers as
quickly as possible.
CHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF MILK AND CREAM SAMPLES
Forty three formal, seven informal milk samples and five
informal cream samples were taken for chemical analysis.
The milk samples contained satisfactory averages of 3.7 per
cent milk fat and 8.8 per cent of milk solids other than fat.
These results are above the minimum standard of 3 per cent milk
fat and 8.5 per cent milk solids other than fat laid down in the
sale of Milk Regulations.
Of the five informal cream samples submitted to chemical
analysis, four were satisfactory and one (Sample No. 2019) Cornish
Clotted Creamy was found not to be prepared by the traditional
methods of scalding, cooling and skimming.
BIOLOGICAL MILK SAMPLES (FARM BOTTLED MILK)
Seven samples of Tuberculin Tested Milk were taken for
biological examination with negative results.
