(b) Infantile Mortality.
The number of deaths of infants under one year of age
was 54—48 legitimate and six illegitimate babies. The
number of births was 620—585 legitimate and 35 illegitimate.
The Infantile Mortality Rate, i.e., the number of
infant deaths under one year of age as compared with 1,000
births—is therefore 87, or separating the deaths of legitimate
from illegitimate infants, the Infantile Mortality Rates are
82 and 171 respectively.
The causes of death during the year 1925 in the case
of infants, is set out on Table III, and this table, together
with the rather high Infantile Mortality Rate for this year,
forms the subject for comment in Section VII, page 62 of
this Report. For purposes of comparison the rates for the
period of 1921 to 1925, are shown in the Summary of Vital
Statistics—Table I.
(c) The Zymotic Death Rate.
The Zymotic death rate, i.e., the number of deaths
resulting from the seven principal zymotic diseases, viz. :
Smallpox, Scarlet Fever, Measles, Diphtheria, Whooping Cough,
Fever, (Typhus, Typhoid and Continued), and Diarrhoea, is for
the year 1925, 4 per 1,000 of the population. The actual
number of deaths occurring from the above-mentioned
diseases was 18.
