Disposal of Condemned Food
Condemned food is disposed of by tipping and burial under supervision at a refuse tip. Meat
condemned at the slaughterhouse is treated in accordance with the Meat (Staining and Sterilisation)
Regulations 1960, before being released to an animal products factory for processing.
Slaughter of Animals Act 1933-1958

the slaughtering of animals were observed.
Diseases of Animals Act 1950
The rural nature of some parts of the district makes the correct administration of the various
requirements relating to diseases of animals extremely important. The widespread epidemic of Foot and
Mouth disease which occurred during the year led to the introduction of a Foot and Mouth Control
Area Order which included the Borough. Great care has always been given to the correct handling and
treatment of swill in accordance with the Diseases of Animals (Waste Food Order) 1957 and during
the year samples of swill have been submitted for examination for the presence of Salmonellae, but none
were isolated.
There are 34 licensed boiling plants in the Borough:165 visits were made to piggeries and boiling
plants.
The surveillance of stock moved into the area under the Movement of Swine Order is carried out
by the Council's Veterinary Officer, with the exception of animals arriving at the slaughterhouse or
requiring a further Movement Licence for the purpose of removal for slaughter.
Number of Movement Licences received 248
Number of Movement Licences issued 38
There were no cases of notifiable disease during the year.
