Thirty-one samples of mains water submitted for bacteriological examination were all classed as
satisfactory.
Miscellaneous
(a) Ice Cubes
All 13 samples of ice cubes submitted for examination were found to be satisfactory. These figures
contrast favourably with those for 1966, when 10 samples of ice cubes were found to contain B. coli.
(b) Water Dispensers
Of the 13 samples taken from refrigerated water dispensers, five were found to be unsatisfactory
and one suspicious. The unsatisfactory results were due to contamination, either during the filling
of the dispenser or from failure to keep the dispenser clean. Further samples taken after these matters
had been brought to the attention of the staff concerned, were found to be satisfactory.
(c) Storage Tanks
Ten samples of water from indirect supplies, i.e. water which has passed through cold water storage
tanks were examined. Two were unsatisfactory and five were suspicious. Dead birds were found in two
improperly covered tanks.
The importance of ensuring that, as far as possible, only direct main connections are used for water
required for drinking and culinary purposes was emphasised, together with the necessity for ensuring
that storage tanks are kept properly covered at all times and are thoroughly cleansed at regular intervals.
