Sample No. 417 : Smoked Saithe.
An informal sample of Smoked Saithe was reported by the Public
Analyst to contain benzoic acid (850 p.p.m.) contrary to the Public
Health (Preservatives etc. in Food) Regulations 1925-1953. The
article was withdrawn from sale and the attention of the German
supplier was drawn to the irregularity.
Sample No. 436 : Lemon, Glycerine and Honey Linctus.
The Public Analyst reported that the description of this syrup
was misleading. Correspondence with the manufacturing company
showed that the question was being considered by the Association of
the British Pharmaceutical Industry and further action on the sample
was deferred for a recommendation by the Association.
Sample No. 445 : Compound Syrup of Hypophosphites B.P.C.
The sample was reported by the Public Analyst not to conform
to the standard of the British Pharmaceutical Codex, and the matter
was taken up informally with the manufacturing chemists.
Sample No. 452 : Marmalade.
The sample proved to be deficient in soluble solids and was a
home-made product. On receipt of the Public Analyst's report, the
sale was stopped and the supply discontinued.
Sample No. 473 : Cheese and Ham Spread.
An informal sample of an imported German cheese and ham
spread proved to be deficient in butterfat, and to contain excess
moisture having regard to the recommendation of the Food Standards
Committee. The sample was also found to be incorrectly labelled.
Correspondence with the importers and the German supplier
brought about a decision to market the product under a description
which brought the food outside the definition of Cheese Spread.
Sample No. 474 : Sugar Sweet Cooked Shoulder.
The sample was reported by the Public Analyst to be without
any sugar content, and subsequent correspondence with the suppliers
resulted in the product being sold under another description.
