Sample No. 131 : Golden Elixir.
An informal sample of Golden Elixir, purchased on the 18th
July, 1955, was found not to have been dispensed in accordance with
the formula printed on the label, one ingredient being absent. The
Vendor stated that the missing ingredient had been used when the
mixture was first dispensed, and had formed an unattractive sediment
; the use was discontinued but the labels had not been altered.
The Vendor immediately amended the labels, and no further action
was taken in this case.
Sample No. 138 : Pork Sausages.
A sample of Pork Sausages purchased on the 19th July, 1955,
was found to contain 90 p.p.m. Sulphur Dioxide, and a preservative
label was not displayed at the time of sale as required by the Public
Health (Preservative in Food) Regulations 1925-1953. The
Vendors stated that the preservative notice had been temporarily
mislaid and they have taken steps to ensure compliance with the
Regulations in the future.
Sample No. 139 : Milk.
A sample of Milk purchased from a cafe on the 19th July, 1955,
was found to be deficient in milk-fat to the extent of 19%. The
Owner stated that the Sampling Officer had been served from part
of a bottle of milk and that the assistant had failed to shake the
bottle to distribute the fat when it was first used. The Owner
undertook to renew urgent instructions to his staff to ensure that
the mistake did not recur.
Sample No. 163 : Whipped Cream Bon-Bons.
A sample of Whipped Cream Bon-Bons, purchased on the 20tn
September, 1955, was found to contain only 1.3% milk-fat, and the
Public Analyst stated that a milk-fat content of not less than 4%
would be required to justify the description used.
The sweets were imported from Holland, and following a meeting
with the importing distributors the Company agreed that all
future consignments would be sold as Whipped Bon-Bons, and
immediate instructions were given for display cards, labels and price
tickets to be amended.
