Altogether an average of 39.9 hours was spent on each
M. and C.W. case, and an average of 18.9 hours per Domestic
case.
After allowing for charges waived in necessitous cases, sick
absences on the part of the Home Helps, and the intermittent
character of their occupation, the balance sheet at the end of the
year was as under:—
£ s. d.
Wages paid 619 12 10
Payments received or due 417 1 11
Net loss 202 10 11
In Richmond the Home Help Service is a combined one and
provides help for Domiciliary Maternity cases and cases of
illness and other emergencies in the home.
During the early part of the year the two services were
entirely separate and were administered from different offices.
This was found to be unsatisfactory and wasteful of personnel
and, accordingly the services were united and based on the Health
Centre, Windham Road.
In many ways a difficult service to organize, there is no doubt
that the Department was able to assist a number of very deserving
cases. It is gradually being expanded as it develops—any rapid
expansion would be extravagant and unsatisfactory. An important
difficulty has been to find suitable Home Helps who are reliable,
enjoy the work, and are prepared to undertake the duties as a
permanent occupation.
