Further, estimates have also been accepted by the Council
for the erection of 4 more houses on a spare plot of land in Dudley
Road, adjoining the existing Housing Scheme, and the work of
erection is to commence almost immediately.
The total number of houses and flats owned and controlled by
the Council up to December 31st, 1925, is 373.
This is no mean achievement and shows that the Council is
fully alive to its responsibilities.

The number of houses and flats erected under this agency during the past five years is :—

Though much has been done locally to cope with the housing
shortage, there is evidence that more remains to be done before
the shortage in the district has been overcome.
Unfortunately, the majority of houses built by private enterprise
during the last five years are beyond the means of the
average working man.
Overcrowding. Application for Workmen's Dwellings.
In December last, on the instructions of the Health Committee,
the Town Clerk made a census of the applicants on the
waiting list for Corporation dwellings, which list then totalled
1130. It is interesting to note that of this number no less than
379 of the applicants lived outside the district.
As a result of the Town Clerk's canvas, the list of applicants
was reduced to 483.
A house to house inquiry has also been made of certain
streets in each Ward throughout the Borough to ascertain to what
extent overcrowding was prevalent.
The number of houses or premises at which inquiries were
instituted was 2266, and a detailed report is now in course of
preparation for presentation to the Health Committee.
