HOUSING.
General Housing Conditions.
It is gratifying to be able to record that the question of
maintaining good housing conditions throughout the district
continues to receive the very earnest consideration of the Council,
and the fact is generally recognised that good housing makes for
sound health.
Year by year the housing conditions in the Borough shew
steady signs of improvement, both from the point of view of the
erection of new houses, and the supervision, repair and maintenance
of existing dwellings.
During the year 1919 the Ministry of Health called for a
survey of housing needs for the district. Subsequently the
programme for building 114 houses to meet immediate needs was
accepted,
This programme has not only been carried into effect, but the
number of new houses and fiats was increased from 114 to 168.
Subsequently a further 10 houses were erected on the Darell
Road site.
Thus, the total number of new houses and flats erected by
the Council during the past live years is 178.
